Although Apple, HP, and Dell may be some of the most common producers of laptops, people are unaware of the first makers such as: IBM, Altair, Xerox, Micral, and so on. These may have not been the most efficient or popular makers of laptops today, but these companies are responsible for the foundation of the laptop. Unfortunately, some of these models made by these industries can not compare to the currently popular models of today.

The first laptop, made by Adam Osborne in 1981, weighed 24 pounds sold at $1795. Nowadays, people do not even consider a laptop if it weighs more than 5 pounds or that exceeds a price of $1200. This huge difference of weight and price is due to the new form and function of today’s laptops. In comparison to Osborne’s laptop, today the MacBook Air is available for purchase, weighing only 3 pounds, obtaining multiple functions and applications, and is sold at the same price. With the growth of technology, we have been able to play around with our laptop models according to its function.

Once the battery powered laptop was created in 1981, our portable personal laptop seemed to be complete. With this aspect complete, the makers of the laptop were able to explore different materials for its design and were allowed to use their imagination and create. Now that there is a stable laptop model to work with, the producers are able to experiment with its style. In addition to the style, producers look towards other physical assets they can add to their mode; some examples include the touch screen option, voice control option, webcams, limiting weight, etc.

Because form and function appears to be bottomless when it comes to the laptop, a balance of our desirable form and function must be met. This supports our reasons for buying the HP tx2z over a simple laptop like a Dell Vostro. Although all laptops may have the common applications or wireless internet and word processors, style and additional functions determine what we believe is “the better deal”. Here at Crave, as we stare longingly at our giant chocolate Easter eggs, we can't help but remember that oh-so-long-ago New Year's resolution to finally get fit.

Thankfully, the latest laptops are doing the work for us -- they're slim, trim and a whole lot sexier.
You'd have to be living in a rabbit hole to not know that thin is in this year. Just 19mm at its thickest point, Apple's MacBook Air sports one of the most innovative designs we've ever seen. But it's not alone in the department of sleek.

The Toshiba Portege R500tips the scales at a meagre 779g, which isn't much more than a loaf of bread. Like a gym membership card, you could easily put the Tosh in your bag and forget it's there.
If it's mobility you're after, may we introduce the Lenovo ThinkPad X300? With its 13.3-inch screen and solid-state drive -- they're all the rage, too -- it ups the ante on the Air and R500, making for an intense battle of the featherweights.
The laptop manufacturers must also realise that your well-earned monthly dosh is, like ours, split between your gym membership and trips to the chippy, and have started offering low-cost laptops that don't skimp on quality.

The Asus Eee PC 701 started the trend, but there's a bevy of newbies waiting to take pity on your wallet. The Dell Vostro 1400 starts at just £233, has a range of configurations and, dude -- it's a Dell. While it may not be as stylish as its XPS M1530sibling, we'd be surprised if you could find a more feature-friendly option for that sum.

The Envy also comes with a 160GB Seagate 7200rpm hard drive as standard, but if you're really looking to turn heads then you'll be pleased to know that up to three HDDs can be combined to provide up to a whopping 600GB of storage. An 8x DVD writer is also included as standard.
The 17in screen is driven by an Nvidia GeForce Go 7950 video chip, with 512MB graphics memory, but even this can be doubled to ramp up your on-screen performance. The 17in panel provides 1920 x 1200 pixels.
Connectivity comes courtesy of Bluetooth and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. A seven-in-one memory card reader is also built in, while the whole system runs on Windows XP Professional as standard.
The Envy H:171 is available now, but won't make your bank manager envious because prices start at around $5000 (£2440/€3618).

Two treats for the price of one here folks, we’ve got the latest laptop from style gurus Asus and titbits on a new mobile nVidia 7 series graphics card before its official launch.

Funnily enough, this happens more than companies would like to admit: one launches a product not realising it has unannounced peripherals inside. That said, nVidia doesn’t seem to be on the warpath so something must have been agreed beforehand. Let’s start with the laptop and work our way down.
As always, it’s a bit of a looker – dubbed the A6Vm – it has a 15.4in WXGA screen yet weights only 2.8Kg. This can be backed up with an AMD Turion 64 or Pentium M 700 sequence processor, a maximum of 2GB of DDR2 533MHz RAM and a 100GB HDD. A swanky extra is the integrated 1.3 megapixel camera, with more standard stuff like Bluetooth, wireless g, and SPDIF output making up the numbers

Standing out a mile, however, is the installed nVidia GeForce Go 7300 graphics card, a previously unknown mobile option from the 3D specialist. Little is revealed about this mysterious offspring but Asus does let slip that it comes in either 128 or 256MB configurations, is DirectX 9.0 and Shader Model 3.0 compatible and uses nVidia’s PureVideo technology for smoother playback. Performance is ambiguously described as “increased by 41 per cent over previous graphic solutions” but compared to what exactly? I very much doubt it is going to outrun a Go 7800GTX.
In addition, the fact that it uses TurboCache suggests it will be more of a midrange offering but we’ll have to grab one by the throat and benchmark it within an inch of its life to know for sure. No pricing or release dates have been made available yet, but we’re curious to say the least…

Toshiba Qosmio G40

The latest laptop in Toshiba’s Qosmio line has been sighted. The futuristic looking Qosmio G40 is getting a facelift from its predecessors, changing the keyboard base color for a silvery art deco angular finish.
Inside the beast there’s an Intel 2 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB of RAM, HDMI 1.3 output and two 200GB hard drives. A major change is the inclusion of a HD-DVD-R so that you’ll finally be able to burn your own HD-DVDs. The unit’s 17 inch widescreen display has a max resolution of 1920 x 1200.
Since all we’ve got to go on for the Qosmio G40 are leaked photos and specs at this point, take all intel with a grain of salt until the official word comes down. That said, supposedly Toshiba will let this baby fly loose onto store shelves come June and around the price range of $3,000.
